Guide overview
Everything Bettersubbook can do, how to use it, and why you might want to. Start at the top, or jump to the page you need.
What Bettersubbook is
Bettersubbook is a free browser extension for the Subbook shift board. It does three jobs:
- It knows your schedule. Bring in your calendar and it finds your work shifts and your busy time (classes, meetings, other jobs).
- It makes the shift board smarter. On Subbook's Unfilled Requests page it adds search, filters, and sorting that can see which open shifts fit around your schedule.
- It saves typing. One press fills in the Add Request form for one of your saved shifts. You always press Submit yourself.
On top of that you can restyle the popup and the Subbook page with themes, fonts, colors, dark mode and animated backdrops.
Note
Bettersubbook is unofficial and independent. It is not made by, or affiliated with, Subbook, Campus Recreation or the University of Illinois. It only runs on the Subbook site, has no account and no server, and keeps your data in your own browser.

What Bettersubbook will never do
- Submit a request for you. Autofill fills the form and stops. You review it and press the site's own Submit button.
- Change your calendar. It only ever reads events, and it only asks for read-only access.
- Send your shifts or calendar to the developer. There is no Bettersubbook server. See Your data and privacy.
- Run on other websites. It only works on the Subbook site.
How this guide is organized
Pages are grouped by what you're doing: Your schedule (getting data in), Everyday use (shifts, Review, Autofill), On the Subbook page (search, filters and sorting), Availability, Make it yours (looks), and Help and reference. Use the menu on the left, or type in its filter box to find a page by keyword.
