Getting started
A five-minute walk through installing, pinning, the welcome tour, and what each part of the popup does.
- Install it, then pin the icon so it's one click away.
- A welcome tour opens once and walks you through setup. You can replay it any time.
- The popup has three tabs: Shifts, Review, Settings.
Set it up
- Install the extensionAdd Bettersubbook from the Firefox Add-ons site or the Chrome Web Store. A new tab opens automatically with the welcome tour.
- Pin the iconClick the puzzle-piece (Extensions) icon in your toolbar. In Chrome, click the pin next to Bettersubbook. In Firefox, click the gear next to it and choose Pin to Toolbar. Pinning keeps the popup one click away.
- Bring in your scheduleThe tour offers a few ways. The simplest is to export your calendar and drop the file in. See Bringing in your schedule.
- Approve your shiftsBettersubbook lists the shifts it found in the Review tab. Approve the real ones and they appear on your Shifts tab.
- Open SubbookSign in to Subbook as usual and go to Unfilled Requests. The search bar and Filter / Sort panel appear above the table.
The welcome tour
The first time you install Bettersubbook (never on updates) it opens a nine-step checklist in its own tab. The steps are split into two groups:
- Set up: pin the icon, choose how to add your schedule, export your calendar, import the file, approve your shifts.
- Look around: Next up and Autofill, adding shifts and inservices, Availability and sorting, Themes and scenes.
The tour shows the real popup with a spotlight and short tooltips. While you have no shifts of your own it uses example shifts so there's something to click. As soon as you import a file it switches to your real data. Your progress is saved, so you can close the tab and resume later.
To run it again, open the popup and go to Settings → Welcome tour.
Until you've pinned the icon, added a schedule and approved at least one shift, the Shifts tab shows a small Finish setting up card (“1 of 3 done”). Press Continue the tour to resume, or the × to dismiss it for good.
A tour of the popup
- + opens Add a shift. Press it again (it becomes ×) to close it. Details
- Tabs. Shifts is your saved list, Review holds what Bettersubbook found (with a count), Settings is everything else.
- Next up. Your next upcoming shift (or all of that day's shifts). One button fills the request form.
- Week bar. Step through the weeks with the arrows. The magnifier opens search.
- Shift rows. The rest of the week, grouped by day, each with its own Autofill and a ⋯ menu.
The popup remembers where you were
Browsers close a popup the moment you click away. So Bettersubbook saves the screen and scroll position you were on and restores them if you reopen it within 30 minutes. After that it opens on Shifts.
Undo is everywhere
Saving or deleting a shift or a block of availability shows a toast at the bottom with an Undo button for a few seconds. So you can act quickly without worrying.
Where to go next
- Bringing in your schedule — the one setup step that matters most.
- Review — turning what was found into saved shifts.
- Search, filter and sort — the payoff on the Subbook page.
